When Is Memorial Day 2026? The Exact Date You Need

Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25. The United States observes this federal holiday on the last Monday of May every year, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved the observance from a fixed calendar date to a Monday, creating a three-day weekend for workers nationwide. This means the memorial day 2026 date always lands between May 25 and May 31.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day specifically honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice, distinguishing it from Veterans Day, which celebrates all who served.

What Day Is Memorial Day 2026 and Why Does the Date Shift?

The answer is Monday. But the specific Monday changes each year because Congress tied the holiday to the final Monday in May rather than a fixed date.

In 2026, May starts on a Friday. Count forward to the last Monday, and you land on May 25. This makes the memorial day 2026 date one of the earliest possible observances on the calendar.

The shift happened in 1971 when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took full effect. Before that, communities observed Decoration Day on May 30 regardless of the day of the week.

How Many Days Until Memorial Day 2026?

Counting down? As of early 2025, you have roughly 480 days until the holiday arrives. The exact number depends on today’s date, so mark your calendar now for Monday, May 25, 2026.
